What a good ISS tracker should show

Here's the part almost nobody explains well: not every "tracker" calculates the ISS's position the same way. The station moves at 27,600 km/h (17,150 mph) and completes an orbit every 90-93 minutes, so any source that isn't refreshed often becomes outdated within minutes. Serious trackers use official orbital data in TLE format (Two-Line Element), published and regularly updated by organizations like NORAD, which describe the station's real trajectory with precision. With that data you can calculate both its current position and future passes with a very small margin of error.
A tool that relies on a rough or outdated orbit can look correct at first glance, but it will fail exactly when it matters most: telling you the precise time to look up and catch the station passing overhead. So if you're planning to use a visible-pass calculation to try to spot the ISS with the naked eye, it's worth checking that the source works with real orbital data rather than a generic simulation.
💡 How to check it yourself: compare the position the site gives you against the current time and the ISS's known speed (about 7.66 km/s). If the map moves smoothly and consistently, without jumps or freezes, that's a good sign it's working with up-to-date data.
